Blunt Abdominal Trauma with Vomiting

Blake got admitted into the hospital on Saturday, 30 March 2013. This was definitely not on our things to do over the long weekend!

It all started on Good Friday evening, when Sean and Blake went to the playground. It started to rain a little, a while after they got to the playground, but Blake insisted on playing so Sean allowed it - a little rain is seldom harmful, seeing how I was allowed out into the rain to play all the time growing up (fun times!). I honestly believe that was what build my immunity to the way it is today.

What Sean and I don't allow was for Blake to jump from point A to point B. Watching Dora kind of made him an active 'jumper', constantly wanting to jump from one point to another, from one step to another. It didn't help that there were older children at the playground doing just that. At his current imitation stage, he did what we told him not to do, refusing to hold onto Sean's hand as well. So what happened? He jumped from a round stand to another, only to land his entire body weight on his abdominal area. According to Sean, Blake let out a very strange type of cry - meaning a cry we have never heard before. And instead of clamoring for Sean to cuddle him, Blake actually signal to Sean to not touch him! We honestly didn't think much about it, cos after a while, he got up and continued playing. He even threw tantrums when Sean took him home. What could be wrong with a child who is still his active self, right?

Shortly after returning home, Blake fell asleep at about 7pm. Nothing unusual on the weekends, when he refuses to take afternoon naps. I took him into his room and let him sleep. I was half-hoping that he would sleep through, cos he has done it before, otherwise it will be a major problem for us! But I also wanted him to get up within an hour to have his dinner and milk, cos the last time he had food was quite a few hours ago. Turns out, he slept through the night.

The next morning, I went in to check on my boy. He was semi-awake, but he didn't react the way that he normally does when he sees me on weekend mornings. He was drifting in and out of sleep. He sat up for a while, only to go back down again. So what did mommy do when the little boy sat up? Pictures! Haha.

Then I asked him if he wanted milk. He had virtually no reaction, so I made some for him. The Saturday before, he happily drank his milk in sleep mode before heading out for his school's family day, with no problems. But that morning, he barely put the bottle in his mouth before pushing it back into my hands. I asked him, "Are you sure you don't want milk?" Then he took the bottle back, and drank a little before regurgitating. The first round caught me off-guard, and before I could get him to sit up and clear the mess, he vomited even more out, with quite a bit flowing out from his nose too! That really scared me. It was a lot of vomit for so little milk! Hearing my panic shouts, Sean came in and took Blake away to clean and comfort him. Blake had started crying by then, probably cos he had no idea what was going on, and mommy was panicking.

While I was cleaning the bed, Blake sat on the sofa, completely dazed and vomited another two times, according to Sean. This was when we thought, something must be really wrong with Blake. He looked really pale, had absolutely no energy to even sit up on the sofa, looked like he was going to fall asleep again, and rejected everything we offered him - from his favourite snacks to sweets!

It was then that we decided, Blake had to go to the hospital. Something was definitely not right with him. I made a call to my mom, and told her what happened, hoping she would be able to watch Nakayla while Sean and I rush Blake to the hospital. It was a Saturday, the most packed day of the week for my parents. So thankful that my mom was willing to give up her Saturday activities to help me watch Nakayla for the day. Thank you, mommy!

After Nakayla was settled at my mom's, Sean and I rushed to the hospital with Blake in a cab. I was definitely not thinking straight, cos instead of going to Gleneagles like we always do, I had asked the cab driver to take us to KKH instead. I only realize that when we were preparing to admit Blake into the hospital.

The children's A&E department was pretty fast, either that or me going to the vending machine to buy some sandwiches and coffee really took a long time, cos by the time I returned with the food and coffee for Sean (we haven't had breakfast), they were already in one of the cubicles and Blake had already been checked. In a matter of minutes, we were at the back where Blake was placed under observation.

He was placed right in front of the television, which was showing cartoons on Disney Junior. Haha.

They gave him some glucose water, and when he vomited again after taking less than 30ml of it, they said it is best to have Blake take an X-ray, and to admit him for an overnight observation while they run some tests.

So we moved to the next room where Blake had his X-ray taken. Despite crying throughout, Blake remembered his manners and said bye to the doctor and nurses in the X-ray room when they left. Quite a funny sight at such a daunting place.

We then waited for the results to be out, and during this time, Blake started to become a little more active. He even took my food to eat. That's a good sign! After waiting for quite a while, I was wondering why nobody called us, so I went back to the same doctor to ask. Turns out, we were supposed to prepare for admission after taking the X-ray.

While Sean was at the counter handling the admission stuff, I followed Blake wherever he wanted to go. He started his Dora imitation, pointing at things going, "Is this a fish? No! Is this a fish? No! Is this a fish? YES!" Yes, Blake is very much into Dora now. Another good sign!

By the time we got to his ward and room, Blake was 80% back to his normal self. While waiting for the doctors to come and check on Blake again, I went down to get some lunch (yes, from breakfast to lunch!). Nurses came in and told us that Blake cannot eat, just in case of this and that, and to let us know that after they draw the blood, they will leave the plastic thing in him, in case he has to go on drip. Sean and I were very sure that Blake wouldn't need to go on drip - call it parents' instinct or whatever - cos Blake seemed almost like his normal self, and he was busy snatching my food from my hand!

Then came the dreaded blood test. My poor boy was so traumatized they had to splinter both his hands down to draw the blood. They also left the plastic thing in his hand, like they said they would.

He got very agitated whenever he saw the plastic thing on his hand

Blake managed to un-splinter himself on one hand, and attempted to pull out the plastic thing many, many times! We could see blood flowing out of the tube! Sean and I then decided, no point having Blake with that when it's not 100% sure that he will go on drip. I'd rather they poke him a second time when there really is a need for it, than to risk him pulling it out and having blood splatter all over the place.

I spoke to the doctor, and she agreed to let me take it off Blake. I then went to get the nurse and asked them to remove it. Now, this is the first time I really got very angry and upset at a healthcare personnel. The nurse insisted on leaving the plastic thing on, and even gave me the talking-down attitude. And when I asked her, what if Blake were to pull it out, she replied, "Pull out then pull out lor." Oh really? I know for sure Blake will pull it out on his own (by hook or by crook), and I'm asking you nicely to have it removed the proper way, but you refused to, and that's the answer I get for asking what happens if Blake really does pull it out? This time round, I stood firm and told her straight up to remove it right away.

The next nurse who came in to remove it from Blake had the same attitude, she said, "So if later have to poke again for the drip, we just poke ar!" Again, I looked straight at her, and told her to remove it. If you ask me, getting poked twice is definitely better than being poked the entire time, and risking unnecessary loss of blood for nothing (cos it's still not 100% that Blake has to be on drip)!

Blake was once again put through another traumatizing event when they were removing the plastic thing for him. So thankful for the husband! He went through all of this with Blake cos I'm way too scared! I remember when Blake was hospitalized in 2011, the team at Gleneagles had wrapped that plastic thing real nice for Blake, he didn't even attempt to do anything to it, and when they came to remove it, I looked away. With the good pressure Sean had on the wound when the plastic thing was removed, Blake had no blood-soak plaster!

And while annoyed, Blake soon got back to being himself :)

After all that is over, I went home to pack some stuff for Blake and Sean (didn't know he had to be admitted!), and dropped by my parents' place to update my mom and play with Nakayla for a really short while, before dashing back to the hospital - had to get Sean his dinner before the shops at KKH Mall closed.

When I came back, dinner for Blake was served and this was what he had been up to, during the time I was gone.

A little after 8pm, I left for home while Sean stayed with Blake. It was close to Nakayla's bed time, and I had been away from my baby girl almost the whole day! Once we got home, Nakayla got ready for bed, and I was all alone for the rest of the night.

Through this entire journey back home and settling Nakayla into her cot, Sean had taken Blake out of the hospital for a walk. It was only after they had returned that I received updates from Sean, complete with photos, from their walk and the night before sleeping.

Daddy rewarded the brave boy with ice cream!

Blake washed up and changed in the clothes provided by the hospital

He didn't like wearing hospital clothes, so Sean changed him into home clothes before sleeping

The next morning, Sean and I spoke over the phone and he said that Blake can be discharged. Yay! And knowing that I have already troubled my mom the day before, I decided to just bring Nakayla along with me to the hospital. After all, it will just be a couple of hours and we'll be out of the hospital. I asked my dad for a ride to the hospital. Hehe.

A place we never want to return to!

While Sean took Blake out for a walk around the hospital, Nakayla slept in the cot

Finally! Everything is done and we can head home!

Nakayla was too low in the baby carrier and couldn't be seen in the above photo,
so I took one with her separately. Haha.

We were told to return to the hospital for a follow-up and ultrasound scan, cos they suspect Blake might have another issue with his abdominal area (they still don't know what really happened to him). Based on the medical term written in the report given to us, Sean did a research online about it and we found out that whatever that is, it is not dangerous, nor urgent. It was recommended to wait till he is after five years old before doing further checks as most of the time, the body would correct itself. So that's what we plan to do. We will continue to monitor him, and will bring him for the follow-up checks after he turns five in another two years time.

Right now, I'm just glad this whole thing is over, and that my baby boy is safe.

Flashback Friday #34

For Blake's first birthday, we decided to hold the celebrations at a bungalow at National Service Resort and Country Club (NSRCC), very awesomely paid for by my dad, might I add J It was also a chance for us, as a little family, to have a mini getaway (like finally!).

9 September 2011: The day we checked in. My dad drove Blake and me down, and left after we have settled and found a little corner for Blake to do his own little thing.

It's actually made up of two sofa seats, with the cushions removed, firmly wedged between the glass panels, the bigger sofa seat, and a super heavy coffee table. Hehe.

After which, I took Blake out for a stroll in the area before heading for lunch. The cafe at the golf area was simply marvelous! Great food and service! J

Then I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get Blake to sleep, while waiting for Sean to join us after work! Once Sean reached the bungalow, we headed out for dinner, and walked around the vicinity further to see if we missed anything. It has been a really long time since we last came here!

After taking some photos, we headed back to the bungalow. As it was Blake's actual date of birth, we had a mini celebration for Blake's first birthday, with cupcakes from Twelve Cupcakes!

I had bought them the day before, but some of them got squashed during the transferring from car to bungalow L

Thankfully, there were three that survived! But one melted a little too much after microwaving, so we were down to two for photo taking. Still taste awesome though! J

Watched more TV while Blake played in his corner and then, it was lights out!

10 September 2011: The day of his birthday celebration! I woke up early to receive the McDonald's breakfast I had ordered in advance, before heading home to feed our pets. Then I met up with my dad. He drove me to Aunty Yochana's where we collected Blake's birthday cake, and he drove me back to NSRCC. I know, I have a super awesome dad J

While I was out, the birthday boy had diarrhea, and Sean was busied the whole morning trying to calm him down and make him comfortable. Sean took him out for a morning walk (while I was out and about), and he calmed down. It's always good to have a super hands-on dad for a husband. Hehe. I'm so blessed to have awesome men, like Sean and my dad, in my life!

Specially made this candle party favors for Blake's first birthday - Ribbons and Tape

When I got back, things were calmed and I started preparing the place for the party that night. Sean also started work on the BBQ pit, cooking all the food before guests arrive, so that he will have enough time to wash up.

My babies! J

When guests started arriving, the birthday boy fell asleep, and woke up just in time to cut the cake! Haha.

Yup, it was a candle-themed birthday party!

The night ended with a walk around the vicinity with lighted lanterns, which I brought along. It was close to the Lantern Festival then. Hehe.

11 September 2011: The day we check-out. Packed everything the night before and sleep till it was just about time to check-out. Haha. We were all so tired! After checking out, we went back to the cafe at the golf side and had a delicious branch before heading home!

All in all, it was a great birthday celebration. So thankful for all the people who came down to celebrate with us, and all the beautiful gifts given to Blake! J

Overcoming the Fear of Swimming Pools Part I

This is probably a super long awaited post, considering how I have been mentioning time and again about Blake overcoming his fear of swimming pools, and how he has enjoyed swimming and water play ever since.

Blake's first experience in the swimming pool was probably what got him to fear it in the first place. It was probably too cold for him, and he was too young to know any better. On top of that, we even had him go underwater a couple of times. Haha. Oh, things parents do to teach their children some lifelong skills.

So after dipping Blake underwater over two separate occasions, we decided to give the neck float a try (read about it here), thinking the neck float will give him some sense of security. Boy, were we wrong! After this episode, we decided to stop bringing Blake to the swimming pool.

The sudden thought of aiding Blake to overcome his fear of swimming pools came after we brought him on his first trip to the zoo.

Seeing how he saw other children enjoying themselves at the water playground, but he was too afraid to join in, made me feel that it's about time to do something about his phobia.

Running towards his safe haven, after spotting Sean sitting some distance away from the water playground.

It had been nearly 10 months since we last went near any swimming pools. It's about time, right? Besides, swimming is a relatively good sport to pick up, and almost all shopping centres have a water playground now. On top of everything else, I pretty much enjoy going to the swimming club to relax! Hehe. Yes, one selfish reason on my part.

So the first thing I thought of was to buy a nice float for Blake to sit on. We have to start from square one, with just his legs touching the water, and every other part of him above.

I brought Blake along to find the perfect float - one that was cute enough to attract him to, made of good material, and hopefully, can hold up to weights of 18-20kg. Reason for the last criteria? I had NO IDEA how long it will take me to get Blake to overcome his fear of swimming pools, so I'd rather buy a good sitting float which he can use for a long time, than to buy one after another as he grows.

Luck was on our side, and we managed to find it at our first search stop!

On March 1, 2012, I brought Blake to the swimming pool on my own for a trial. He was naturally frightened, and it took me a while to settle him down. But after sitting him in the float, and giving him a piece of fallen flower to hold onto, he became a little more comfortable. I walked him around the pool a few times before attempting to take photos of this memorable moment.

A really nice maid and the little girl she was with came over to play with Blake while I went to get my camera. It was very sweet of them to help me out. I had told them Blake was afraid of the water, and the maid started to drip water onto the float, which made Blake laugh! Hehe.

She was also very kind to help us take a few photos! She said some shots weren't very nice because Blake wasn't looking, so she just kept taking until she got a shot of Blake looking into the camera. Super sweet, right? Hehe.

After spending about half an hour walking around the swimming pool with Blake on the float, I attempted to sit him in the shallowest part of the swimming pool, but he was still terrified. So back into the float he went, and we walked around for another 30 minutes before heading to wash up.

Job well done!

I could tell that Blake was mighty pleased with himself that day too. Over dinner, he had a good appetite and was in an extremely good mood!

Daddy and Mommy's brave boy J

After this first attempt of getting rid of his phobia, I decided to bring Blake to the swimming pool at least once a week. I also went on to take him to a couple more places with water play to help speed the process up - will continue this journey I had with Blake in overcoming his fear of swimming pools in the next blog post J

Flashback Friday #32

29 August 2011: After our visit to Singapore Philatelic Museum, and lunch at Pasta Mania, we made our way to the Peranakan Museum. Both museums are relatively near each other, so it was perfect to visit them both on the same day! Hehe.

We did not spend as much time as we would like there, because by the time we reached, we only had 1-2 hours to walk around before closing time! Yes, we were cutting it really close. Haha.

Blake enjoyed playing with all the different types of telephones on display. There were recordings on the telephones, and would play the moment you picked it up. He enjoyed it so much, we spent the most time in that area! Haha.

We stopped to look at areas that really caught our interests, or Blake's. The rest, we pretty much just rushed through because of the time constrain we had. I don't even think we finished exploring the museum before the announcement of the museum closing was made! When the announcement was made, we made our way out.

When we left, we had to be escorted out a different route, cos most of the exits were closed already. Haha. And, from the looks of it, it seems like the museums will be opened for free entry every August!

We gave the museums a miss this year, but I hope to visit more museums next year, with Blake and his little sibling! :D

Museum Opening Hours:
Monday: 1pm to 7pm
Tuesday to Sunday: 9am – 7pm (to 9 pm on Fridays)

Chinese New Year 2013

It's been a week since the start of Chinese New Year, and so far, things have been going great. It has also been raining a lot since! Year of the Water Snake indeed. Haha.

This year's Chinese New Year is like any other, with the exception to having one more in the family! :D

Let's start with reunion dinner on 9 February.

Before leaving home, we got the children to dress in traditional-looking clothes. Blake wore the same outfit as the one he wore to school on Racial Harmony Day, while Nakayla wore a one-piece romper my mom had bought specially for her.

We then headed over to my in-laws place for our annual reunion dinner first. It's getting tougher and tougher to sit down and eat as a family. Blake kept wanting to get up and play with whatever he could find in the house. He seems more excited about the place than eating. And next year, Nakayla will be most likely join in too. Haha. Just as well, we would need that workout with all the feasting we were having!

Family photo from reunion dinner

After dinner at my in-laws, we headed over to my mom's place. Sean, Blake and Nakayla all fell asleep upon reaching, while I helped around the house, to get the place ready for the next few days of celebration. After Nakayla woke up for milk, we went home.

Day 1, 10 February: Woke up and immediately started buzzing around the house getting ready. I remember it was raining that morning, and I was wondering if we should only head out after the rain stop, but it stopped before we were even close to making it to the door. Haha.

First of the two stops that day was my mom's place. We would usually take family photos, and a big one with all in, but with one after another going overseas for work or study, it was getting difficult. So this year, the family photo-taking session took a backseat. I couldn't help but think back to Nakayla's full month. Everyone was present! Everyone came back to see her! We should've taken family photos then! Oh well, that time is over. I'm still very touched that everyone made time in their schedule to celebrate Nakayla's first month :) I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of photo-ops to come!

Here are some photos from the first day:

Don't need to guess who was the star of the day! Hehe.

Steamboat, an integral part of Chinese New Year. The pot just keeps cooking. Haha.

And those who weren't eating at the table with the steamboat, were feasting on Chinese New Year goodies, all packed in transparent and red containers.

My boys tucked themselves away in my mom's room to play games

Nakayla was drinking her milk when I thought, "great for a family photo here!"
Didn't turn out to be that ideal. Haha.

Gave up trying to capture all four of us on my own

Decided to get my cousin to help with the photo-taking. Haha!

Have absolutely no idea how to get Blake to look into the camera...

About an hour or so later, some of them left for more visiting. Those who stayed behind either went to take a nap, or played mahjong. I played with my two cousins and aunt. We don't play with money, it was really more of having fun and passing time. And yes, we're not very good players too. Haha. It was pretty hilarious. I remember my younger cousin winning most of the time, and I commented that it was because she was sitting in front of the window, and it was raining outside. Some people believe that water means fortune. And when the rain stopped, she stopped winning. My aunt, when she has yet to win a single game, said that she will go to the toilet to change her luck, also a thing that some believe will aid in a change of luck. She returned and won. Coincidences for both cases, I guess. Haha.

When dinner time came, we made our way to my grandma's place. It was raining again, so we drove my dad's car over. Everyone else had walked over, and my dad told us to take the car with the two children. So sweet :)

Only one photo was taken that evening, cos we were all busy eating and chit-chatting. Haha!

Days two and three were spent at home, playing with the children. It was a good time to catch up on every hour of lost sleep. Haha.

On the 7th day of Chinese New Year, my mom held another reunion dinner with my dad's side of the family. My sister had invited some of the ASEAN scholars in her class to join us. We usually have Yu Sheng, which my dad calls 'Chinese Salad', on the following weekend of Day 1. Haha. We arrived pretty late that day cos I was busy preparing things for the next day. We were going to celebrate my grandma's birthday! Hardly took any photos that night cos the place was packed.

8th day of Chinese New Year was also probably the last day of celebrations for us. We gathered at my grandma's place for lunch/tea.

Baked a cake for my grandma's birthday

And another for my aunt, who's birthday was a few days before

The feast we had

That is just about all the things we did, during the past week of Chinese New Year. Haha. Happy Year of Water Snake, everyone! :)
